Treat Yourself

Teri 07/09/2018 Comments

When you think about exercising what is your first reaction? A groan? A smile? Anxiety? Satisfaction? I will be the first to say that the best part of my workout is when it is done. And there are many days when the thought of sleeping in or relaxing instead of sweating is very tempting. But I can honestly say I have never regretted a workout. Never ever.

There are many excuses people come up with for not working out. Usually it has to do with lack of time or energy. Someone once told me he never wanted to live his life depriving himself. His view of taking care of himself focused on sacrifice and denial. Do you recognize yourself in that line of thinking? If so, it is time to flip your thoughts. The older I get the more I know how important it is to keep moving. Yes, I have aches and pains but I haven’t given up on exercise. I move in spite of them. My reasoning is I would rather keep going than end up with major health issues or worse. I do not think of my workouts as a chore. They are a gift I give to myself.

Take a look at your calendar for this week. Have any appointments for hair cuts or mani/pedis? Plan to have lunch or dinner with a friend or loved one? Going to the movies? Maybe a massage? These are all important commitments for mental and physical health. Think of scheduling a workout for similar reasons.

Once again, if you aren’t planning to age and be healthy, what are you planning?

Of course after treating yourself to a workout, it is important to eat well. I love grilled salads! If you haven’t tried a grilled Caesar salad look for it the next time you go out to eat. Or try it at home! (I posted a recipe for Grilled Escarole and Beans in 2013.)

Grilled Caesar Salad

Ingredients:

One large or two small heads of romaine

Olive oil

Salt and pepper

Homemade or prepared Caesar dressing (I made this vegan version with hummus)

Handful of cherry tomatoes halved

Smoky, roasted Shiitake mushrooms (recipe here)

Directions:

  1. Preheat grill or grill pan. Remove any wilted outer leaves on romaine and slice in half, lengthwise, keeping core intact. Wash lettuce and pat dry. Brush romaine with olive oil, getting in-between the leaves and season with salt and pepper. Place on grill and sear, two to five minutes per side.
  2. Place on plates for serving. Drizzle dressing over and top with tomatoes and mushrooms.
  3. Enjoy!
